The Shipping News by Annie Proulx. What an extraordinary book. I found it hardgoing at first – bleak, the choppy sentences grated a bit, I found the overload of detail thrown in distracting. But after a few chapter, and definitely once we got to Newfoundland, I started to get swept along and found it gripping and fascinating.
Here’s two studies for how I saw The Aunt (I drew that whilst still reading the part where they are journeying to Newfoundland) and Quoyle (drawn after I finished reading).
